Sibongiseni Mthethwa is a South African soccer player who plays as a midfielder for Kaizer Chiefs in the Premier Soccer League.
The South African midfielder was born on the 20th of September 1994. As of November 2023, Sibongiseni Mthethwa is 29 years old.
Playing for the Black Leopards and being relegated from the 2020-21 South African Premier Division, Mthethwa was signed by first-tier team Stellenbosch in the winter of 2022.
Following a good start of the 2022-23 South African Premier Division campaign, he was suggested for a callup to Bafana Bafana.
Only three Stellenbosch players had been called up before, these being Athenkosi Mcaba, Antonio van Wyk and Jayden Adams.
The callup came for two friendly matches in September 2022. He featured in one of the games, against Botswana. Mthethwa was subsequently called up to the 2023 COSAFA Cup as well.
Nearing the end of the season, several clubs were linked with buying Mthethwa, including Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu.
Stellenbosch manager Steve Barker was reluctant to sell to a South African club, but was “not going to stand in the way when a European team comes in for one of our players, and he’s got an opportunity to play at a higher level”.
On 21 September 2023, with just two days remaining of the transfer window, Mthethwa signed for Kaizer Chiefs on a three-year deal.
How much Kaizer Chiefs paid for Sibongiseni Mthethwa
According to SABC Sport, Kaizer Chiefs forked out a fee in the region of R10 million to trigger Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s buy-out clause at Stellenbosch.
The Glamour Boys stepped things up a notch several days ago following a bid that was confirmed by Stellies CEO Rob Benadie to the public broadcaster, although he’d said at the time the midfielder was a player they wanted to “retain”.
Chiefs signed defender Zitha Kwinika for a reported R3-million a season ago and then went back for striker Ashley Du Preez, who – like Mthethwa – also had a buyout clause in the region of R10-million.
It’s further believed there were discussions around a player swap plus cash before the Soweto giants took a decision to rather meet the valuation to get Mthethwa on their books and strengthen coach Ntseki’s outfit.
Benadie confirmed the sale in a statement late last night.
“When Mthethwa initially joined the club, a buy-out clause was negotiated into his contract and that has now been activated by Kaizer Chiefs. It’s always sad to part ways with a player and person of Ox’s calibre but we would like to wish him all of the best in this next step of his career,” the CEO explained.
