The agonizing wait continues for the family of Rethabile Okuhle Vilakazi, a six-year-old girl from Piet Retief in Mpumalanga, who has now been missing for more than a year and a half.
Since her sudden disappearance on 28 January 2025, local communities, activist groups, and law enforcement agencies have worked tirelessly to uncover clues, yet her whereabouts remain a painful mystery.

The passage of time has not diminished the family’s desperate plea for answers or the community’s determination to bring her home.

The harrowing ordeal began on a Tuesday afternoon when the young learner failed to return home from school.
According to report briefings from the South African Police Service, Okuhle had been utilising a standard scholar transport service.
On that fateful day, the school bus reportedly arrived at the designated bus stop near her home in the Mondo area earlier than its usual schedule.
Okuhle dismounted the vehicle alongside several other young learners and began walking along the familiar pedestrian path leading to her homestead.
When her mother arrived at the bus stop at the expected hour to collect her daughter, the area was deserted, and Okuhle was nowhere to be found.

Following an initial frantic search by family members and immediate neighbors, a formal missing person case was officially opened at the Piet Retief SAPS on 30 January 2025.
Despite early community intervention, physical search parties scouring the surrounding Mpumalanga terrain, and localized investigations, no definitive traces of the child were discovered.
The prolonged absence of Okuhle highlights a deeply concerning trend regarding the vulnerability of young children walking unsupervised from public transport points in South Africa.
In the wake of her disappearance, community activists and organizations like Missing Children South Africa mobilized to amplify her case on social media platforms, distributing her photograph nationwide.
Over the months, various unverified tips surfaced, including a distressing social media report suggesting the child had been spotted across the border in Eswatini, though subsequent investigations failed to validate these claims.
As the months turned into seasons, the emotional toll on Okuhle’s family has been immeasurable, defined by the constant torment of not knowing whether she is safe.
Law enforcement authorities continue to treat the case with extreme urgency and emphasize that any piece of information, no matter how minor it may seem, could break the deadlock in the investigation.
The South African Police Service maintains an active appeal for public assistance. Anyone who may have been near the Mondo bus stop on 28 January 2025, or anyone possessing information regarding her current location, is urged to urgently contact Warrant Officer Martin Ntshangase at 072 638 1858.
