What began as a missing person investigation has now rapidly transitioned into a high-profile murder and hijacking inquiry conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The Discovery at the Smallholding
According to preliminary police reports, the breakthrough in the case occurred when authorities received credible intelligence directing them to a Boskraai smallholding in the Pretoria North policing precinct.

Search-and-rescue teams, alongside specialized K9 units, were deployed to comb through the agricultural property.

It was the keen senses of the search-and-rescue dogs that ultimately alerted handlers to a specific patch of disturbed earth.

Upon further inspection, police unearthed a shallow grave containing the badly decomposed remains of an adult male.

Forensic experts and pathologists were called to the scene, and the body was subsequently identified as that of the missing Akasia resident.

Hijacking and Vehicle Sale Motive
As the investigation deepens, harrowing details are emerging regarding the circumstances surrounding Whelan’s death.

Initial findings suggest that the motive behind the murder was purely financial and opportunistic.

At the time of his disappearance, Whelan’s vehicle—a Nissan Sentra—was also noted as missing.

Investigators tracking the vehicle’s movements discovered that it had been hijacked during the encounter.

In a brazen attempt to profit from the crime and eliminate evidence, the suspects allegedly drove the hijacked sedan to Pretoria West, where it was illegally sold to an unsuspecting buyer or illicit vehicle syndicate.

Shock Waves Through the Community

The grim discovery has sent shockwaves through the quiet communities of Akasia and Pretoria North.

Neighbors and local residents have expressed immense grief and rising fear over the brutal nature of the crime.

Many have turned to social media to offer condolences to the Whelan family while demanding swift, uncompromising action from law enforcement to secure justice.

Community policing forums have reiterated calls for heightened vigilance, noting that smallholdings and outlying agricultural areas are increasingly being exploited by violent criminals seeking to conceal illicit activities.
