Residents of Endlovini in Khayelitsha, Western Cape, are calling for urgent safety measures along Mew Way Road.

They describe it as a “death trap”.

This follows the death of a 26-year-old man who was hit and killed by a speeding taxi on Saturday morning, 25 October 2025.

The victim was reportedly trying to cross the road when he was struck.

A vegetable vendor, who witnessed the accident, said she has seen many similar incidents.

“He tried to beat the taxi, but it was going too fast,” she said.

She said Mew Way is one of the busiest and most dangerous roads in the area.

The taxi involved in the crash was left with a shattered windshield, and the driver did not flee the scene.

Another resident said the tragedy highlights an urgent need for speed humps to slow speeding vehicles down.

“This road is dangerous. It’s too busy as well. I think it must have speed humps to stop vehicles from speeding,” he said.

However, he said slowing traffic could also make drivers more vulnerable to criminals.

“The situation is tricky because speed humps may make it easy for hijackers to steal vehicles,” he said.

The family of the dead man visited the scene but declined to speak to the media, saying they were too distraught.

Police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident.

He said a case has been opened.

“Harare police registered a culpable homicide case for investigation following a fatal accident in Mew Way, Endlovini,” he said.

Twigg said the 26-year-old man was declared dead at the scene and “circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation”.
