The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) has donated R15,000 and a minibus taxi to the family of Lolitha Kowa (7), a young girl whose life was tragically cut short last week.
Lolitha was last seen playing at a neighbour’s house, a stone’s throw away from her own home on Tuesday, 22 July in the evening.
Her body was found on the street, about two kilometres from her home.
Codeta chairperson Nceba Enge, accompanied by other leaders from the association, visited the grieving family in Kuyasa on Thursday, 31 July, in the afternoon to express condolences and show support.
During the visit, Enge publicly condemned the alleged involvement of Odwa Jack, a driver working under Codeta’s umbrella, in Lolitha’s death.
“As Codeta, we are deeply sorry for what happened. The person accused of this crime is our driver, and for that, we take responsibility for expressing our regret,” said Enge.
He said as an organisation they decided to do something: “We have decided to donate R15,000 to help with funeral expenses, and we will also provide the family with a Toyota Quantum, fully paid for by Codeta. We do not support the actions of the accused. We want justice to take its course.”
Ward 99 councillor Lonwabo Mqina commended Codeta’s leadership for not turning their backs on the family, despite the accused being linked to their association.
“It means a lot to see Codeta here. Yes, the driver works under your association, but your presence shows that you do not condone what happened. We are all parents, and we don’t raise children to commit such acts,” said Mqina.
Nosipho Daniels from Malihambe Women’s Movement, which supports families affected by gender-based violence, also praised Codeta.
“I’ve been walking with this family during difficult times. Codeta’s contribution has brought some relief and will truly help,” said Daniels.
Lolitha’s aunt, Ntombifuthi Kowa, who has been speaking on behalf of the family, expressed deep gratitude.
“We appreciate what Codeta has done. Their support has lifted a burden from our shoulders. We also appreciate other organisations such as the ANC, who have been supporting us,” she said.
ANC regional chairperson Ndithini Tyhido added that the ANC has also been assisting the Kowa family since the tragedy.
