Residents said the place was full of people relaxing and drinking when gunmen arrived.
“We heard several gunshots and later saw three men running away on foot. They disappeared between the shacks. We’re shocked and don’t know what the motive could be,” said a resident.
Attack linked to protection fees
Another community leader believes the attack could be linked to protection fee demands.
“When they ask for money, and one refuses, they send a brutal message. This was not a robbery. They didn’t take anything. They just shot people and left.”
“It looks like they wanted to send a warning to the owner of the shebeen. People won’t feel safe going there if he doesn’t pay,” said the leader.
He added that crime in the area is getting worse.
“Protection fee gangs used to target foreigners, but now it affects everyone. This is the life of businesspeople ekasi,” he said.
Cops hunt for killers
Western Cape police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed the shooting.
He said Nyanga police have opened two murder cases and three attempted murder cases following the attack.
“Two males aged 30 and 40 were shot and fatally wounded, and three others injured,” said Van Wyk.
He added that one victim was found inside the shack with a gunshot wound to the head, while the other was found a few metres away, also with gunshot wounds.
The injured victims were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Van Wyk said motive for the attack is still under investigation and the suspects fled the scene. Cops are now hunting for the killers.
