A taxi driver was killed and two people were seriously injured after the taxi allegedly drove on the wrong side of the N3 and collided head-on with a bakkie near Cato Ridge on Saturday night.

Emergency services were called to the N3 towards Pietermaritzburg near the BP Oasis shortly before 11pm.

Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, said the taxi had been travelling towards Durban in the Pietermaritzburg-bound lane when the crash occurred.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find chaos and severe damage to both vehicle,” said Jamieson.

The taxi driver, believed to be in his thirties, sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
The two occupants of the bakkie were seriously injured.

Paramedics stabilised them while firefighters from the eThekwini Fire Department used rescue equipment to cut them free from the vehicle.

Once freed, the injured patients were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Metro Police and the South African Police Service were on the scene and are investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
