An Umgababa family is seeking justice after a woman was allegedly killed by her boyfriend in KwaMashu earlier this month.

Anele Mzila (23), a call centre agent, was last seen visiting her 35-year-old boyfriend and co-worker, Nkululeko Yuda of Eswatini, at his rented place.

Yuda has appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court, where he is facing a charge of murder.

He has been remanded in custody until his next appearance on May 27, when he is expected to apply for bail.

According to the deceased’s sister, Nosipho Mthembu, Anele was staying at KwaMashu to be closer to work.

She said the family was not aware that something had happened to her younger sister until police came knocking at her Umgababa home.

“The police arrived on May 5 and informed us that they found what they believed was Anele’s body at her boyfriend’s place at KwaMashu N-section under the bed.”

“My mother went with them to identify her, but the body was in a very bad state. She had started to decompose, and the head had no hair,” said Mthembu.

Her mother had to rely on other bodily marks that she knew of to make an identification. Anele was laid to rest on May 10.

In an official statement released by the family, it alleged some information and messages it came across suggested that Anele may have experienced abuse in her relationship, something it said no one in the family was aware of.

“We want justice for Anele, and we also want to continue raising awareness about gender-based violence and the silence many women suffer through behind closed doors,” read the statement.
