Tragedy struck on the N10 road in Middelburg, 61 km towards Cradock, on October 18 when a fatal head-on collision involving a Toyota Quantum and a rigid truck resulted in one fatality.
Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson, Makhaya Komisa, said that the incident occurred at about 06:45.
He said that the vehicles were travelling in opposite directions, with the Toyota minibus carrying only the driver from Cradock and the rigid truck carrying only the driver from Middelburg.
“Both vehicles collided head-on, and the driver of the Toyota minibus died instantly as declared by the emergency services,” said Komisa.
He said that the driver of the truck escaped unharmed and was attended to by emergency personnel.
Komisa said that it is alleged that the vehicle was attempting to overtake a stationary truck when it collided head-on with the oncoming truck.
“A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Middelburg SAPS for further investigation,” said Komisa.
