Kaizer Chiefs have apparently been given a heads up that midfielder Given Thibedi is available after being released by Swallows.

In August 2021, Chiefs confirmed that Given Thibedi had joined their Soweto counterparts Swallows FC on a permanent deal after spending previous stints at the club on loan.

Thibedi, who was a product of Chiefs’ youth development academy, initially seemed set for more game-time at Swallows, but injuries have hampered the career of the 25-year-old.

He last played back in December, but Swallows FC chairman David Mogashoa has confirmed to SABC Sport that the two parties had “agreed that it was not working out”.

“So we thought it was in his best interest to allow him to leave early,” Mogashoa explained. “The coach [Ernst Middendorp] had made it clear that he did not see him in his plans even though he is a talented player.

“I have spoken to Given and he is obviously disappointed, but this will give him an opportunity to start afresh.”

Thibedi has been unable to enjoy a run of decent action even as different coaches have taken charge at Swallows, and it remains to be seen whether any other club will now offer him a lifeline.

“It’s unfortunate, the talent is obviously there,” Mogashoa elaborated to SABC Sport. “But there are so many players in his position and there’s just no room. I also alerted Chiefs, as he is their academy product, to ask if they would have a place for him.”
