The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) student accused of setting his school’s acting principal’s car on fire is expected to appear before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court.
The incident allegedly occurred after the pupil’s phone was confiscated by the principal.
Videos of the car on fire at Northbury Park Secondary, Pietermaritzburg, went viral on Wednesday, 7 September.
It is alleged that the 17-year-old poured petrol over the principal’s car before setting it alight.
In one of the videos that went viral, people can be seen attempting to put the flames out to no avail.
Spokesperson for the KZN South African Police Service (SAPS) Thenjiswa Ngcobo stated that the Grade 10 pupil fled the scene after committing the crime. Police are investigating criminal charges.
“It is alleged that a 17-year-old learner was seen pouring petrol on the vehicle before fleeing the scene.”
“The matter is still under investigation and the police are investigating a case of malicious damage to property,” said Ngcobo.
A report by EWN revealed that the teenager was briefly arrested before being released into his parents’ custody.
