Stellenbosch have completed the signing of Cape Town Spurs and Bafana Bafana striker Ashley Cupido as the replacement of Ryners.
Stellies have officially signed Cupido from Cape Town Spurs. The deal was announced on Tuesday evening.
Involving an undisclosed fee with highly-rated DStv Diski Challenge star Mervin Boji moving in the opposite direction to Spurs permanently.
This publication reported that the clubs had finalised the deal. But only agreed on personal terms this evening, leading to the announcement from both Western Cape-based outfits.
Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie expressed enthusiasm about the new signing: “We’re excited to welcome the talented 23-year-old to our ambitious club.
“He is a player who will fit our system well. And who we believe has the ability to consistently feature at the top end of the PSL’s goal-scoring charts.”
Benadie further highlighted Cupido’s potential impact: “Mervin is a local hero who we believe will take this opportunity to get more consistent game-time and realise his full potential.
“He was instrumental in our reserve team winning two DStv Diski Challenge titles. Scoring 31 goals in 30 appearances in the competition. And we have no doubt that he will succeed in this new challenge.”
A reliable source confirms that Stellenbosch FC acquired Cupido for a fee of R7 million with R2 million in add-ons plus Mervin Boji.
“The deal for Ash(Ashley Cupido) was valued at R7 million, with R2 million in add-ons and a player in Mervin Boji.”
“With his medical scheduled for Wednesday morning. But personal terms were sticky, however they got it over the line, also it is a five-year contract,” the source revealed.
This significant move follows the recent transfer of Iqraam Rayners to Mamelodi Sundowns.
Stellenbosch FC initially made a substantial multi-million bid for several Spurs players, including Cupido, which was initially rejected.
Ashley Cupido, a 23-year-old striker, caught the eye of top teams such as Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs due to his stellar performance last season.
Where he scored eight goals in the South African top flight. Despite Cape Town Spurs’ relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC). The club’s financial pressures led them to sell key player.
Stellenbosch FC’s acquisition of Cupido marks a strategic move to strengthen their squad. And maintain their competitive edge in the PSL.
