Over 100 Tamaho Primary School learners were admitted to hospital after suffering stomach cramps.
The pupils from Tamaho Primary School in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, were rushed to hospital on Wednesday, 6 November, after experiencing stomach cramps.
Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation, Matome Chiloane, raised concern over the incident, which is suspected to be a food poisoning that affected 110 pupils at the school.
Gauteng Department of Education’s spokesman, Steve Mabona, reported that a total of 110 pupils began experiencing stomach cramp symptoms and vomiting after consuming samp during break time.
“Emergency services responded swiftly, and all affected pupils were transported to various clinics and hospitals for immediate medical attention.”
“All 110 pupils were hospitalised following the incident, with 98 of them subsequently discharged after receiving medical care,” Mabona said.
He said 12 pupils remain in hospital under medical supervision as healthcare providers continue to monitor their condition.
Chiloane raised concern about the recurrence of such incidents at Gauteng schools.
“It’s alarming to witness such cases of foodborne illness affecting our pupils.”
“The safety and well-being of our pupils is our highest priority, and we’re committed to working closely with health authorities to understand and address the root causes of these incidents.”
“We wish all recovering pupils a speedy return to good health,” he said.
