Orlando Pirates have rejected an offer from Russian Premier League side FC Akron Tolyatti for winger Relebohile Mofokeng which was around $1.5 million (R26 million).
Orlando Pirates, the Buccaneers, have made it clear that they are not open to letting go of one of their brightest talents just yet.

The Soweto giants turned down an initial offer from FC Akron Tolyatti, a newly promoted Russian Premier League club, for Relebohile Mofokeng.
The bid, reportedly valued at around $1.5 million or R26 million, was deemed insufficient by Pirates, who view the 20-year-old as a key part of their long-term plans.
Sources close to the club indicate that any potential deal would need to exceed R50 million to even be considered, reflecting Mofokeng’s rising stock after a breakout season in the Betway Premiership and continental competitions.
Pirates’ rejection aligns with their strategy to develop and retain talent before cashing in. The club turned down similar bids for Monnapule Saleng in 2024, only to see him loaned out later.

Mofokeng’s contract runs until June 2027, with a release clause reportedly above R40 million, giving Pirates leverage. His market value, per Transfermarkt, stands at €2 million (R40 million), but recent form could push it higher.
FC Akron Tolyatti, founded in 2012 and based in the industrial city of Tolyatti, Russia, earned promotion to the Russian Premier League (RPL) after finishing second in the FNL in the 2024/25 season.
The club, owned by the local petrochemical giant TogliattiAzot, is investing heavily to compete in the top flight, with a budget of €20 million for transfers.
Akron’s interest in Mofokeng fits their strategy to blend youth with experience, seeking creative wingers to complement forwards like Tim Kleindienst.
The RPL, featuring clubs like Zenit St Petersburg and Spartak Moscow, has seen an influx of African talent, with players like South Africa’s Percy Tau succeeding at Al Ahly before European moves.
Akron, aiming for mid-table stability, views Mofokeng as a low-risk, high-reward signing, given his age and PSL exposure. However, geopolitical tensions and sanctions on Russia complicate deals, requiring indirect negotiations through agents.
The $1.5 million bid, modest by European standards, reflects Akron’s budget constraints, but Pirates’ rejection signals they hold the cards.

Russian clubs have targeted PSL stars before, with Mamelodi Sundowns’ Lucas Ribeiro linked to Spartak in 2025.
For Mofokeng, a move abroad could accelerate his career, but Pirates prefer a domestic or African step first, like a loan to a top PSL rival.
