Orlando Pirates youngster Relebohile Mofokeng shines at the 13th edition of the Gauteng Sports Awards.

The 19-year-old midfielder from Sharpeville, Vaal won the Sports Personality of the Year award on Sunday, 24 November.

The category was voted for by the public via SMS, in which Mofokeng outdid finalists Akani Simbine, Dricus Du Plessis, Ronwen Williams, and Tatjana Smith.

He was awarded a VW Polo Vivo, though he couldn’t collect it in person. His proud mum accepted the car on his behalf.

Hosted at the University of Joburg (UJ), the awards celebrated sports stars and administrators.

Relebohile emerged from the School of Excellence and was scouted by Pirates.

Making a mark in the PSL football season, he won the Nedbank Cup and MTN Cup with Pirates and earned the DStv Young Player of the Season.

Olympic swimmer Tatjana Smith was crowned Sportswoman of the Year. The 2024 Olympics winners received cash incentives for their achievements.

Among them were Bayanda Walaza, Akani Simbine, Shaun Maswanganyi, Bradley Nkoana, Simoné Kruger, Pieter Du Preez, Donald Ramaphadi, and Lucas Sithole.

The incentives were sponsored by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation.

This year’s Lifetime Achiever, selected by Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation MEC Matome Chiloane, was Peter Manero Ngobeni.

Once South Africa’s fastest sprinter, Ngobeni won multiple national titles and became the first black sprinter to be awarded Springbok colours in 1985.

All 59 finalists received R15 000 each, while winners earned an additional R25 000 each. They are now set to participate in the national South African Sport Awards later this year.

The event, themed Celebrating Excellence, Inspiring the Youth, aims to honour Gauteng-based athletes for their achievements and highlight Gauteng as the Home of Champions.
