There has been a heartwarming response to Mmapeu Neo Hlanga’s ordeal after she became the victim of an acid attack.

The 27-year-old woman from Sekgweng Village in Zebediela, Limpopo was allegedly attacked by Ivyone Maja (25) in October 2024, who accused her of dating her partner and the dad of her kid.

The attack left her with severe burns on her face and body, which require extensive plastic surgery.

Limpopo Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego visited Mmapeu on Wednesday, 9 July to show her support. She also commended her bravery for speaking out.

“We stand with Mmapeu during this challenging journey as she works towards her healing and strength,” said Mashego.

A fundraising campaign #JusticeForMmapeu was launched by Tlolane Lesiba Lethabo (25) and Juza Maja (27) to help cover the costs of Mmapeu’s surgery, estimated between R200 000 and R300 000. Mmapeu requires seven to eight procedures on her face and body.

The campaign has already raised R100 000, with a charity drive scheduled for Sunday, 13 July to collect more donations.

Tlolane shared the reason they launched the campaign: “It’s painful. Her daughter is still young. She’s now scared of her because of the changes on her face and body.”

Mmapeu expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support.

“I’m humbled by the level of support I’ve received so far. I’m confident that my dream to get my face fixed will be a reality,” she said.

Maja was arrested on 14 February and appeared in the Zebediela Periodical Court on 15 February.

She was granted R3 000 bail and the case was transferred to the Mokopane Regional Court.

She made her first appearance in the Mokopane Regional Court on Tuesday, 1 July, where the matter was postponed to 21 July.
