A serious crash involving two taxis and two small cars occurred on Tuesday afternoon, 3 March. 

Six people, four men and two women, were killed in the accident.

The crash occurred along the D19 road near Seshego Cross towards Matlala Road.

Two people suffered serious injuries while four others escaped with minor injuries.

According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the deadly crash happened when a minibus taxi allegedly tried to overtake.

The department’s spokesman, Matome Tauatsoala, said preliminary reports show one of the minibuses attempted to overtake while facing oncoming traffic.

Reports indicate that one of the minibuses was attempting to overtake while facing oncoming vehicles, resulting in a collision,” he said.

A survivor and witness, David Sethole, said he was driving his NP200 bakkie when the incident happened.

He explained that a speeding Toyota Quantum started overtaking.

“The two oncoming vehicles were able to avoid it, but the other Quantum couldn’t, and that’s how they collided head-on,” he said.

Limpopo Transport MEC Violet Mathye said the department is waiting for the final report.

“So far, we are unable to tell who was wrong, but we are waiting for the final report,” she said.

Mathye also sent condolences to the grieving families.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish a speedy recovery to those admitted to hospital,” said the MEC.

Due to the severity of the crash, the road was temporarily closed while emergency services and traffic officers attended the scene. It was later reopened to traffic.
