Residents of Manamakgotheng and surrounding villages have been warned to stay alert after a leopard was seen near the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.

The North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism issued the urgent warning on Sunday, 10 May saying the animal poses a potential danger to the community of Manamakgotheng and surrounding villages.

Department spokesman Jerry Matebesi said the leopard was seen in and around the Pilanesberg area.

“We urge residents to exercise extreme caution, avoid disturbing the animal and keep safe,” he said.

Residents have also been warned not to confront or attempt to capture the leopard as it could attack.

The department, together with the North West Parks and Tourism Board and the South African Police Service, is searching for the animal.

Anyone who spots the leopard is urged to report it to the nearest police station or contact the department on 061 478 5932.

It’s still unclear whether this could be the same leopard that was reportedly seen in April 2026 near Christiana.

Residents previously shared pictures of a leopard allegedly spotted between Christiana and Jan Kempdorp.
