Chippa United’s run of form in the DStv Premiership is silencing a lot of the criticism directed towards coach Morgan Mammila, who only holds an entry-level SAFA D license qualification.

Following their 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs in Durban at the weekend, making it three wins from three DStv Premiership matches, Mammila said his appointment to replace Daine Klate last month is not about proving a point.

He adds that he has an impeccable record from his days in the lower divisions up to the topflight, although much of it was spent as an administrator rather than a coach.

“A lot of people don’t know my background, and I’m not here to prove any point to anyone. I’ve won leagues from Castle up until NFD to PSL. And I even won Telkom Cup in the PSL. What I have, most coaches don’t have,” said Mammila.

“If you ask coaches, have you ever promoted a team from LFA to Castle? The answer is no. Have you ever promoted a team from Castle to ABC Motsepe? The answer is no. Have you ever promoted a team from ABC Motsepe to NFD? The answer is no.

“Have you ever promoted a team from NFD to PSL? The answer is no. But if you ask me, I’ll say, ‘Yes, yes, yes, yes.’ I’m ticking all the boxes.”

After being asked whether he prefers being a coach or pulling the strings behind the scenes, Mammila reiterated that he will serve The Chilli Boys wherever Mpengesi sees fit.

“To be honest, whatever that’s given to me. If I can tell you [about] the players I got from the street, you’ll be shocked. I think 30% [of those players] are at Bafana Bafana – the players that I, personally, picked,” he added.

“I’m not going to mention names, but there are a lot. If I tell you that [Evidence] Makgopa never played even for an LFA team but he went and played PSL. I got him from nowhere, as a young boy.

“I got [Bonginkosi] Makume from a tournament… The list is endless man. I got Skhwama [Tshepo Matete], I’m the one who introduced him to professional football – he was there, playing a tournament [and] I’m the one who gave him the opportunity.

“Azola [Matrose] is here, what more do you ask for?”
