Kaizer Chiefs are yet to officially announce Khune’s new role, but insiders reveal intriguing details about his post-retirement position.

While Khune is no longer a player, he continues to play an important role behind the scenes at the club.

The South African has revealed that Itumeleng Khune, the former Mzansi number one goalkeeper, is currently enjoying a retirement package at Kaizer Chiefs.

The club decided not to renew his contract as a player when it expired in June 2024. Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jnr had previously mentioned that Khune would receive a role at the club in recognition of his iconic status and contributions throughout his career.

ITUMELENG KHUNEʼS NEW ROLE AT AMAKHOSI

Insiders suggest that Khune is transitioning into the marketing department, working alongside Jessica Motaung.

However, the source noted that the marketing department is currently inactive, leading Khune to assist in various other roles around the club.

“Khune is at the Village like any other employee from Monday to Friday, as that is what is required of him,” said the source.

“It’s true he will be working with the Sponsorship and Marketing department, but at the moment there is nothing happening in that department.”

Despite the lack of specific duties in marketing, Khune remains a vital part of the club. “He is deployed to other departments where management feels he can help out.

“But he is an employee and he is getting his salary every month. Since he hasn’t started in his new post yet, he is still paid the same salary like he used to get as a player,” the source added.

Involvement in training and club activities
Another source revealed that Khune remains active at the club.

He would occasionally train with the goalkeepers to stay fit and support the team’s younger players.

“He even trains with the goalkeepers at times. It’s both to keep himself fit and his health and as well as to help the young goalkeepers in the team,” the second insider said.

Despite his active involvement, Khune will not be considered for registration as a player, even with Brandon Petersen’s injury.

“He won’t be considered for registration despite the injury to Brandon Petersen. He is now just enjoying his retirement while the club honours him in different ways,” the second source observed.
