Kaizer Chiefs have triggered the option on midfielder George Matlou’s contract to keep him at Naturena for another season.

Questions had been raised over the player’s future, considering his lack of game time due to injuries during the 2023/24 campaign, but it has now been confirmed The Glamour Boys do still feel he can still add value to the team.

Chiefs are cleaning house in preparation for the arrival of new coach Nasreddine Nabi, who has already sent the rest of his technical staff led by Fernando Da Cruz to assess players and make transfer recommendations to the club.

The public broadcaster reported yesterday that the Soweto giants had informed senior figures Sifiso Hlanti, Keagan Dolly, and Siyethemba Sithebe that their contracts would not be renewed beyond its expiry on 30 June.

But Matlou has survived the chop, despite only featuring in 10 matches under last season’s coaches, Molefi Ntseki and Cavin Johnson, who split the reins in Naturena during what proved to be the club’s worst-ever PSL season.

Amakhosi ended the campaign in 10th place and are hopeful Nabi, who is only set to arrive next month after leading current employers FAR in the Throne Cup final in Morocco, will restore their pride and dignity.

It’s expected Matlou will then be part of the revolution after the decision was taken to exercise the clause on his deal to retain his services for one more year.

The former Moroka Swallows and Bidvest Wits midfielder signed for Chiefs in July 2022, but his spell at the club has been disrupted by injuries.

SABC Sport has been informed Matlou is at the end of his rehabilitation, having been sidelined since around November last year, and is eager to jump in and make a contribution.
