Another devastating accident has occurred on the N2 in Mandeni on Wednesday morning, involving a truck and a car, resulting in one death.

This tragic accident comes just days after eight lives were lost in a horrific accident at the same location last Friday.

On Friday, the N2 highway was closed for most of the morning after a truck and a vehicle collided.

MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma said the province ended the past week on a sombre note following the deaths of eight young people in that road accident.

He said the vehicle was being driven by a Grade 10 pupil, Banele Sishi (18) and the passengers were Sphelele Ngcongo (27), Simphiwe Ngcongo (25), Sifundo Zikhali (18), Nkanyiso Zikhali (25), Mpumelelo Innocent Dladla (23), Velangenkosi Ncwane (19), and Siphile S Dladla (17).

He said one mother lost her three children in the crash.

Reacting to Wednesday morning’s accident, MEC Duma said he has dispatched a dedicated team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate to assist at the scene.

“We will reach out to the families once we have more details,” said Duma.

In light of the recent tragedies, MEC Duma has announced a wreath-laying ceremony to be held on Thursday at the accident site.

Additionally, Duma said he will dedicate the next four days to personally supporting the families of the eight people who died last week, from accompanying the relatives to the mortuary, to finalising funeral arrangements.

MEC Duma, in collaboration with Mayor of Ilembe District Municipality Thobani Shandu, and Mayor of Mandeni Local Municipality Thabani Mdlalose, has finalised preparations for the memorial service and mass funeral happening later this week.
