The brutally murdered Katleho Motsoeneng (22) was laid to rest at Tebang Village, QwaQwa in the Free State on Saturday, 28 February.

Family, friends, and villagers gathered in quiet unity to pay their last respects to the remains of their beloved one.

It’s still not clear who killed Katleho or what the motive behind the tragic act may have been.

Despite the shock and grief that have gripped the community, no confirmed information has been released identifying those responsible or explaining the circumstances that led to the incident.

Family, friends, and residents remain searching for answers, hoping that ongoing investigations will uncover the truth.

Katleho was fetched from his home by his friends, who had invited him to accompany them on a visit to the initiates at the Metsimatsho Mountains in 2023.

The outing was meant to be a friendly and respectful visit, as members of the community often go to show support and encouragement to the initiates during their time in the mountains.

He left home in their company, with no indication that anything was wrong, making the events that followed even more difficult for his family and the community to understand.

His friends never returned to his family to inform them about his disappearance or explain what had happened after they left together.

The lack of communication and delay in coming forward raised even more concern and distress for the family, who were left searching for clarity about his whereabouts.

The tragic discovery was made when a shepherd found a skull and two bones on the mountains.

The remains were later subjected to forensic testing, and DNA results positively confirmed that they belonged to Katleho.

This confirmation brought a painful sense of closure to the family, who had been searching for answers, while also deepening the sorrow and shock felt throughout the community.

Katleho’s grandfather Dirk Motsoeneng told Daily Sun that although the family feels some relief at finally being able to lay their loved one to rest, they are still burdened by many unanswered questions.

He explained that while the burial has brought a measure of closure, it does not ease the pain of not knowing exactly what happened or why only part of their loved one’s remains were recovered.

“Our hearts are still heavy because we do not know the full truth about what happened to him. However, we thank God that my grandson is finally laid to rest,” he said.

Sello Joubert Lephoto, spokesman for Metsimatsho Community Patrollers, said they have called a meeting with all initiation school principals to discuss the crime that occurred during the initiation school season.

“What happened on the mountains is a pure crime. It’s not a clear reflection of how initiation schools should operate. We are in the process of setting the precedent in our mountains,” he said.
