Media and Public Statement by the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma

03 February 2026

Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House: I have received a report on the meeting with 11 families that lost their loved ones in a horrific accident on R102, in Lotus Park, Isipingo.

The sheer number of victims and circumstances under which they departed is a source of shock and disbelief.

We welcome the confirmation by the South African Police Service in KZN and the Minister of Transport Barbra Creecy, in particular, that an investigation is underway. Both SAPS and Road Traffic Management Corporation must leave no stone unturned.

Importantly, we acknowledge the professionalism of the investigating officer from SAPS Isipingo Police Station.

In particular, he has worked with our team to ensure that families are assisted to go through the process of identifying their loved ones at the Park Rynie Mortuary. We can confirm that all families have been located – with the last family located this afternoon.

I have mandated the team to be closer to the families as they go through this emotional process, which involves accepting the tragic departure of their loved ones.

Flowing from above, we wish to announce that families expressed their wish to bury their loved ones individually.

In this regard, a Mass Prayer and Memorial service will be held for the victims and it is scheduled as follows:-

Date : 05 February 2026
Time : 10h30
Venue: King Zwelithini
Stadium, Umlazi

On this day, our Provincial Chaplain Viva Mpungose, all our chaplains, ambassadors, and interfaith leaders will pray to God to shine his face upon families of the victims.

Critically, we invite the people of KwaZulu-Natal to attend the memorial service and be support pillars for the families.

May the departed souls rest in peace: –
