Commuters are lucky to be alive after a taxi crashed into a stationary truck in Khayelitsha, Cape Town on Monday, 27 October 2025.

The accident happened at about 2pm on Mew Way Road, opposite TR Section, and left six people injured, including pupils.

Witnesses said the driver was speeding in a 60km/h zone and appeared drunk when police arrived. A resident who saw the accident said the incident could have been avoided.

“The taxi driver was speeding, and this is a 60km/h zone and now he has caused an accident, injuring people. The speeding was unnecessary and unacceptable,” said the resident.

According to residents, the taxi failed to negotiate a curve before slamming into a truck parked on the side of the road.

The impact left the taxi heavily damaged, and several commuters shaken.

The ‘drunk’ driver was arrested after the accident on Mew Way Road opposite TR Section at 2pm.

Another witness, Lelethu Mjekula, said some of the passengers were pupils on their way home.

“They were crying and scared after the crash,” she said.

City Traffic Services spokesman Kevin Jacobs confirmed that the driver was arrested for drunk driving.

“The City’s Traffic Services attended to the scene in Khayelitsha of an accident between a minibus and a truck at about 2pm.

“The driver of the minibus was arrested for driving under the influence.”

Jacobs added that six people sustained slight injuries and were taken to Khayelitsha Day Hospital. The roadway was cleared shortly after 3.40pm.

Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk also confirmed the incident. He said: “A taxi collided with a stationary truck that was parked on the side of the road.”

“The taxi driver was arrested for reckless or negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.”

The driver is expected to appear in court as soon as he’s charged.
