Traffic on the N3 has come to a standstill after a crash involving around 20 vehicles on the Pietermaritzburg-bound carriageway at Cliffdale on Thursday morning.

Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) spokesperson Sindi Msimang confirmed that emergency services are on the scene and still assessing the extent of the accident.

“We don’t have the number of injured as yet. Both bounds are closed and emergency services are currently on scene,” she said.

Msimang added that there is no indication yet of when the highway will be reopened.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said their teams have also responded to the scene, where several people are trapped in the wreckage.

“ALS Paramedics are on scene and more units are mobile to assist,” he said.

Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
