Witwatersrand Taxi Association (WATA) shocked by the brutal murder of one of its drivers as he was shot by unknown suspects.

The driver’s body was discovered near a mine in Randfontein, Gauteng on Wednesday, 20 August.

WATA spokesman Hamilton Miya told Daily Sun the association is reeling from the loss.

“Our hearts are broken. Not only was he killed, but his taxi was also torched. This is very painful,” he said.

The driver, 37-year-old Lebohang Monama, was last seen on Thursday, 14 August driving a white Toyota Quantum.

It’s reported fears for his safety quickly grew when family members were unable to reach him on his cellphone later that day.

Those fears deepened when Lebohang’s taxi was found burnt in a field in Slovoville on Friday, 15 August.

The vehicle appeared to have been stripped before it was set alight, but Lebohang was nowhere to be found.

His decomposing body was found with a gunshot wound to the back of the head days later.

WATA said the discovery has left a deep wound. “This is a tragedy for his family and for the entire taxi industry.”

Daily Sun journalists reached out to the Monama family, who were unfortunately not available to comment.

Police spokeswoman Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the cops have opened an inquest docket after a body was discovered at a dumping site in Randfontein.
