The 31-year-old suspect allegedly beat and stabbed Happy who was originally from Stanger, KZN, but had moved to Joburg for work. He was arrested on Sunday, 12 April.

Happy’s brother, Innocent Mthethwa, said the ex-boyfriend was caught hiding in Melmoth, northern KZN, after he had escaped from Stanger.

He said the arrest happened on the day Happy was buried, before her coffin was lowered into the grave.

“We were informed by the local induna about the arrest because the police were unable to get any family members as we were busy with the funeral,” said Innocent.

He said this was good news to the family as it was painful that the alleged murderer is roaming the streets while they are in pain.

“At least, now we know he is in jail and we pray he won’t be released on bail,” said Innocent.

Before Happy was killed, she was visiting her family for the Easter holidays.

“She had attended all the church ceremonies with some family members. When she was done, she contacted her ex-boyfriend as she wanted to go and fetch her clothes at his place,” said the brother.

Innocent said that before she could even arrive at the ex-boyfriend’s house he called and asked her why she wasn’t fetching her clothes as she had indicated.

“He asked where she was and then went to her. He stabbed and slit her throat. He then escaped from the scene,” he said.

Innocent said his sister and the ex-boyfriend had been together for close to two years.

“They didn’t have kids together, but my sister had three kids with someone else and so did the ex-boyfriend.”
