Mzansiʼs number one most-watched show, Uzalo, has allegedly halted production with immediate effect over non-payment from the SABC.

Uzalo, which airs on SABC1 during weekdays at 8.30pm, has reportedly stopped recording new episodes after complaining about non-payment from the public broadcaster.

Sources told Daily Sun that production company Stained Glass TV has told all staff, cast and crew to stay at home while the company negotiates with the SABC.

A source said the memo was sent to all staff, cast and crew on Monday, 4 August, and it’s not clear when they will resume.

Daily Sun saw a copy of the memo sent to all staff, cast and crew with the subject, “Temporary Pause in Production”.

The memo says due to severe cash flow constraints, the production company is forced to pause production with immediate effect.

“Please know that we are actively engaging with the SABC to resolve the matter as swiftly as possible. We understand the impact this has on each of you and remain committed to keeping you informed as the situation develops.

The memo sent to the cast by Stained Glass TV.

“We are deeply grateful for your unwavering passion, professionalism, and dedication to this special production. Your contribution continues to inspire us, and we are doing everything in our power to get back on track,” the memo said.

Sources said the SABC has been making late payments to Uzalo for a long time, and this frustrates the actors and crew.

“I think this time it’s beyond Stained Glass’ control as they opted to pause production and engage the SABC for payments.

“Although Uzalo is the most-watched show in Mzansi, now it’s normal for the cast not to get paid on time, and Stained Glass normally says it’s because of the SABC.”

Stained Glass TV head of communication Nomfundo Zondi told Daily Sun that the SABC is the one who will give the official comment.

SABC spokeswoman Mmoni Ngubane said: “There is no production break on Uzalo, and production continues as scheduled.”

“The SABC remains committed to its partnership with the production company Stained Glass and values the continued contribution of the cast and crew.”
