The community of Ward 70 in Fleurhof and Florida is demanding justice for 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek, who was found murdered at his home in Joburg.

Jayden’s body was found on Wednesday, 14 May on the staircase at Swazi’s Place, a housing complex in Fleurhof near Florida on the West Rand.

He went missing on Tuesday, 13 May after coming back from school.

On Saturday, 17 May, a sad but united community marched from Fleurhof to the Florida Police Station, calling for quick action and protection for children.

His crying mum, Tiffany Meek, and her heartbroken family were joined by schoolchildren, local councillors, and community leaders during the peaceful protest.

Tears flowed as residents paid tribute to the young boy and stood together with the Meek family.

At the Florida Police Station, a list of demands was handed over to Major-General Nonhlanhla Kubheka, the Joburg District Commissioner.

Ward 70 community leader Lori Richards said: “Our call is clear, we demand justice, safety and action. We will no longer remain silent while our children are murdered, and our streets remain unsafe. Time for change is now.”

The community called for an urgent police response and a proper plan to address crime and protect children in the area.

Although Kubheka was not warmly welcomed by the angry crowd, she promised the community police are doing all they can.

“We are going to respond to the demands, as indicated. We are at an advanced stage with our investigation. Give us space so that we can finish our investigation.”

“As the SAPS, we need to do justice for Jayden. As the SAPS we are also going to do justice for Jayden. Believe me, we are going to do justice for Jayden. I am going to arrest the suspect,” said Kubheka.

Jayden’s family was later taken inside the station to get an update on the case.

Tiffany expressed her thanks.

“Thank you so much to everyone who came and supported us and walked with us on this long journey,” she said.
