Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has insisted his side will only enter the market in January for the right players and won’t rush into signings.
Chiefs current squad was put together for rebuilding phase, but it has been found wanting, as Sundowns crushed them 4-0 when they met with Tshwane giants in the third game of the season.
They are set for stern test against Pirates, who are on fire at the moment after crushing Sundowns 3-0 in the MTN8 second leg semi final on Saturday.
On the other hand, Chiefs could not overcome AmaZulu in their MTN8 semi finals in both legs, crashing out on away goal rule to the Durban-based side.
This has raised question marks whether this squad is good enough to fight for the league title or other trophies, but Zwane has argued that they will enter the market for the right players and not out of desperation.
“Obviously we will do the profiling. We have players who have been doing well. And we’re not going to focus on the negatives, we’ll focus on the positives,” he said in Durban after the game against Usuthu on Sunday.
“At one stage we had an opportunity two weeks ago where we created a lot of chances and did not take them [against Chippa]. Had we got maximum points on that night, it was going to be a different ball game – we were going to be number one on the table.
“But this is a journey. The league is a race, and we’re running our own race until the last game of the league.
“That’s when we have to do introspection – look at ourselves, where to improve and what to do.
“But obviously if there is a player who we think is good enough to come and play for Kaizer Chiefs and he’s available, we will definitely bring him on board just to beef up here and there.
“At the moment the only thing we can do is a proper profiling, rather than rush into things – because we want to give the players who are part of the team now the opportunity to showcase their talent and we’ll take it from there.”
Zwane even admitted that Usuthu have better players when it comes to attack when these two sides met earlier this month in the MTN8 first leg, which is the reason they didn’t beat them .
The Derby will be the last game for Chiefs before the FIFA World Cup break next month and December, giving them time to reflect on the first round’s shortcomings. Chiefs will resume the league campaign against Golden Arrows on 31 December in Durban.
