Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has explained his reasoning for the substitution of Kgaogelo Sekgota in Chiefs’ 2-1 loss to Chippa United on Saturday.
Chiefs missed an opportunity to go top of the DStv Premiership table, as Chippa grabbed a late winner at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Zwane said that Sekgota, who has been one of the standout players for the Amakhosi, was not having the best of games, and he felt it opportune to give Khama Billiat a run.
“Look, if you watched the game properly, you will see that he didn’t have a good game,” Zwane said at the post-match press conference.
“And it was key for us that, if one of your key players is not doing well, at that moment, you don’t want him to get to a situation where his confidence is even down where he can’t even come back.
“We still need him for the next game, we still need him we playing a cup game, we’ll be here next week.
“And also trying to create a competition, he must know that if he doesn’t perform, then there’s another player on the bench. And I think Khama came on, he did well. He created a number of chances are us.
“When you compare how Kgaogelo Sekgota [did] first half, in we know he can do better. And the chances that were missed by Khama and were created by Khama, it shows that you on another day, he could have buried those chances, you know, which is what was lacking at that moment.
“So, not that much worried. I know he’s a focussed boy, he’s working very hard. It’s just that today, it was not his day. So we had to pull him out and bring in other players and give them the opportunity as well. And he’s one of the players that played almost all the games.
“So probably because of the number of games, and the games are coming thick and fast maybe the body also is taking too much.”
“So we had to rest him because like I’m saying the games are coming thick and fast and we have to share some match minutes and also give other players the opportunity.”
