A Woman from Mofolo South, Soweto, was shot and killed on Friday morning, 6 June.

The incident happened outside the gate of a property where she rented a backyard room.

The tragic incident occurred shortly after the victim had dropped her son and a friend’s two children off at a nearby school.

According to residents, the woman was walking back from the school, located behind the property where she lived, when she encountered her killer.

Witnesses claim the suspect, dressed entirely in black, opened fire, shooting her in the head as she reached her gate.

Paramedics were called to the scene but sadly declared her dead on arrival.

When Daily Sun arrived at the scene, the woman’s body lay covered with a brown blanket.

Blood stains were still visible on the ground where she had collapsed, even after her body had been removed by pathology services.

The incident has left abahlali reeling with shock and fear.

Many residents have expressed concerns over the rising levels of violent crime, with this being the fifth fatal shooting in the area this week.

Neighbour, Thulile Mbele, recounted the horrifying moment as she was about to take out her dustbin.

“I had just slightly opened my gate when I heard the gunshot. I quickly hid inside my yard.

“Afterwards, I saw a boy running down the street, but didn’t recognise him. When I looked towards my neighbour’s gate, I saw a young woman lying there,” she said.

Thulile said she approached the woman and realised she was still alive.

“I could see her gasping for air. I felt so helpless. I didn’t know what to do. Moments later, she took her last breath,” she said.

“I was inside drinking tea when I heard a gunshot. Then, I heard someone scream that someone had been shot. I rushed outside and saw the body lying by the gate.

“At first, I didn’t realise it was the young woman who had recently moved into the backyard room in the garage. It’s heartbreaking,” she said.

Zola said the woman had been helping look after one of the other tenants’ kids, but little was known about her background.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that a murder case has been opened after a 28-year-old woman was fatally shot outside her residence by an unidentified man.

“We have opened a murder case and are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

“Motive for the shooting remains unknown as investigations continue. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect,” said Masondo.
