Limpopo woman and her brother have been arrested for allegedly killing a one-day-old child.
According to Daily Sun, the 26-year-old woman and her brother (43) were nabbed by Mankweng police in Limpopo for allegedly killing a one-day-old infant by stabbing her with a sharp instrument on the upper body.
The baby was allegedly killed at Lastehoop in Ga-Malatji on Wednesday, 6 November.
Police said preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased was killed after being born at home.
Police spokesman, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, said: “Our preliminary investigation established that the infant’s mum and her brother killed the baby after she was born at home.”
“The two suspects were linked to the incident and immediately arrested. Circumstances that led to the incident are still under police investigation. The suspects will appear in the Mankweng Magistrates Court soon.”
Ward 5 Councillor, Legodi Kgala, reacted with shocked to the incident.
“The information we’re getting is that the culprits don’t reside in Ward 5. They committed this heinous crime and came to bury the deceased in the yard which belongs to their grandparents,” Legodi said.
“No one stays in this yard. Sometimes, we see foreign nationals, but we don’t have people staying here full-time. We’re still shocked and condemn this incident in the strongest possible terms.”
Sandra Jansen van Rensburg from Ngwana House, a shelter for kids in Polokwane urged young parents to seek help.
“We believe these incidents can be avoided, if people know the right channels to follow when they want to give up their kids.”
