The City of Ekurhuleni’s Disaster Management team responded to the drowning incident near Katlehong, where three boys between the ages of 18-20 jumped into the river for a swim and during cultural rituals.

Ekurhuleni emergency spokesperson William Nthladi says one of the three managed to swim to safety.
The other two boys were declared dead on the scene by the South African Police Services (SAPS) rescue team and the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster Management.

Investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident are still ongoing.
