WATERLOO, KWAZULU-NATAL — A sombre atmosphere has enveloped the community of Waterloo Phase 6 after a 70-year-old pensioner was discovered deceased in her home on Tuesday, 15 September 2026.
The elderly woman, who lived alone, was found unresponsive on her bed in a severe state of decomposition, sparking deep concern and grief among her neighbours and church community.
The Discovery

The tragic discovery was made on Tuesday morning by members of the woman’s church congregation.
According to local private security and medical emergency service, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the operations centre received a distress call at approximately 09:38 AM requesting immediate assistance at a residence on Mthoko Road.
Church members had reportedly decided to check on the elderly woman after concerned neighbours noticed she had not been seen for several days.
Alarmingly, the front wooden door of the house had remained partially open for roughly three days, though the external iron burglar gate remained securely locked.
Upon arriving at the property, the congregants walked to the side of the house and peered through a window.
Inside, they spotted the pensioner lying completely motionless on her bed. Simultaneously, a strong, pungent odour emanating from the residence raised immediate red flags, prompting them to contact the authorities.
Emergency Response
RUSA Reaction Officers and paramedics were dispatched to the scene. To gain entry into the locked house, officers had to force open the secure burglar gate.
Once inside, paramedics examined the woman, but it was immediately clear that she had already passed away. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, she was officially declared deceased at the scene.
A Community in Mourning
The identity of the deceased has been withheld until all immediate family members are fully notified. Relatives, including the woman’s daughter, arrived at the scene shortly after the discovery.
The daughter informed reaction officers that while her mother lived by herself, family members made an effort to visit her on a weekly basis to check on her well-being.
The incident has highlighted the vulnerability of elderly citizens who live by themselves. Neighbours expressed their deep sadness over the event, noting that the pensioner was a quiet but respected member of the Phase 6 community.
Investigation Underway
At this stage, the exact circumstances surrounding her death remain unknown. While the locked burglar gate suggests there may not have been forced entry, authorities have not ruled out any possibilities.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) was called to the scene to take over the scene. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the official cause of death and to establish exactly how long the woman had been deceased before she was discovered.
Local authorities are urging anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
