Three people were killed in a horrific crash on the N3 between Ashburton and Lion Park, near Pietermaritzburg on Thursday afternoon.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Gareth Jamieson said: “Paramedics arrived on the scene to find chaos and carnage as both bounds of the national freeway were affected.”
Paramedics immediately assessed the scene where one car, a funeral parlour SUV, and a truck had collided.
“It’s alleged that the two vehicles collided on the Pietermaritzburg-bound carriageway before the SUV lost control and veered through the centre median and collided head-on with a truck,” Jamieson said.
The occupants of the SUV were found entrapped in the wreckage with fatal injuries. Paramedics declared all three deceased on the scene.
The driver of the car suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
The accident caused severe traffic congestion as emergency personnel worked to investigate the cause of the crash.
