Stellenbosch FC have agreed to sell winger Antonio van Wyk to Austrian side SV Ried with Kaizer Chiefs previously interested in the 22-year-old.
22-year-old winger Antonio van Wyk impressed for Stellies in 2023-2024. He made 25 league appearances, scoring three times and supplying three assists.
His move to Austria will be made official once he can travel and pass medicals at his new club SV Ried.
Van Wyk will follow Deano van Rooyen and Iqraam Rayners out of the Winelands side who have been sold to Orlando Pirates and Sundowns.
Chiefs want to bolster their options in wide attacking areas and upfront.
Losing out on Van Wyk could also have a domino effect; Stelllenbosch will be even more reluctant to sell Fawaaz Basadien in this current window considering how many key players they’ve already lost.
Chiefs have so far been unsuccessful in their attempts to sign full-back Basadien who has signed new terms with Stellenbosch.
Sifiso Hlanti left the club and was replaced by Bongani Sam. However, 27-year-old Sam picked up a foot injury and is facing a race against time to be fully fit for the start of the season.
At right-back, Dillan Solomons is also facing a spell out so Reeve Frosler will be the automatic pick on that flank.
Understandably, Chiefs are still trying to reinforce their options in these areas.
Frosler can cover at left-back, but then who plays on the right? With Basadien recently signing new terms with Stellies he won’t come cheap, but as SABC Sport’s Mazola Molefe says, everyone has a price.
Stellenbosch won’t be in a mad rush to sell him, though, after losing key players Deano Van Rooyen and Iqraam Rayners during this transfer window.
It’s the type of situation that might gather steam as we approach 20 September and the close of the window
