According to Transport Department spokesman Unathi Bhinqose, the crash occurred in wet, slippery conditions.

He said a VW Polo, carrying two adults, lost control and collided with both a bakkie and a Mercedes-Benz sedan.

“Sadly, the infant died at the scene. Four other occupants sustained minor injuries and were attended to by emergency services,” said Bhinqose.

He said this incident was among several crashes recorded on Eastern Cape roads on Friday.

“While most resulted in minor injuries with no fatalities, this crash remains the most devastating.

“With traffic volumes expected to increase significantly over the weekend and in the lead-up to the Christmas holidays, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport urges all motorists to exercise heightened vigilance and extreme caution,” Bhinqose said.

He said many holidaymakers have begun travelling as workplaces close, while residents working in other provinces are making their way back home.

“The MEC for Transport in the Eastern Cape, Xolile Nqatha, extends his heartfelt condolences to the family of the infant during this painful and difficult time.
