The eCabhane community in uMzumbe, KZN south coast, is reeling after six members of the Gumede family were killed in a tragic car accident on the Scottburgh freeway on Monday.
The family was reportedly returning from visiting relatives in uMzumbe when their vehicle was involved in the deadly crash.

The incident has left residents of the south coast community, near Port Shepstone, in shock and mourning.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development, Mbali Shinga, visited the bereaved family on Thursday to convey her condolences and offer government support.
This incident has left us in shock and disbelief as six family members have demised coming from visiting their loved ones in uMzumbe.
Shinga said a team of social workers had been dispatched to provide psychosocial support and assess the family’s needs.
The Department of Social Development will also implement a Social Relief of Distress intervention to assist the family with basic necessities, including food.
Department officials visited the Gumede home on Tuesday, where they provided counselling and conducted a household assessment.
Shinga said the department’s involvement would continue beyond the immediate crisis to ensure the family receives long-term support.

“This is a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile life is. We stand with the Gumede family and the entire community of eCabhane during this time of unimaginable grief,” said Shinga.
