POLOKWANE – Controversial Lekompo musician [Lehlogonolo Katlego Chauke, popularly known as Shebeshxt, appeared before the Polokwane Regional Court on Thursday, 10 September 2026, where he faces a staggering 21 criminal charges, including culpable homicide.

The high-profile pre-trial hearing concluded with the court dismissing requests for further delays and officially setting his long-awaited trial to commence on 17 May 2027.

The 31-year-old artist, who has remained incarcerated since late 2025, entered the courtroom under heavy guard.

The atmosphere was tense as his newly appointed legal team, spearheaded by senior counsel Advocate Mutheiwana Sydwell Sikhwari SC, attempted to secure a two-month postponement.

The defence argued that additional time was necessary to adequately review the heavily amended indictment and coordinate their strategy.

However, the court denied the request, ruling that pre-trial proceedings must go ahead to avoid stalling the interests of justice.

A Mountain of Legal Woes: The Amended Indictment

The total number of charges against Chauke has escalated significantly since his initial arrest, rising from nine to a consolidated list of 21 counts spanning multiple separate incidents.

The state prosecution recently reshaped its case by introducing major amendments to the indictment.

The charges brought against the musician include:

* Culpable homicide (and an alternative count of reckless or negligent driving)
* Four counts of attempted murder
* Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH)
* Robbery with aggravating circumstances
* Theft and malicious damage to property
* Unlawful discharge of a firearm

State Advocate Sehlako Mohlaloga previously informed the court that 11 of these charges stem from an accumulation of cases linked to the Lebowakgomo area, which have now been legally consolidated into this single, major regional trial.

While the State chose to withdraw one previous count of unlawful possession of a firearm, the severity of the remaining 21 charges leaves Chauke facing massive potential prison sentences if convicted.

The Incidents Behind the Case

The catalyst for Chauke’s prolonged detention began with a violent road-rage incident on 19 October 2025 along Witklip Street in Ladanna, just outside Polokwane.

Police reports allege that Shebeshxt became embroiled in a fierce confrontation with another motorist.

During the altercation, Chauke allegedly pulled out a firearm and fired multiple shots directly at the victim’s vehicle. A 34-year-old male passenger suffered severe gunshot wounds and required urgent hospitalization.

Following an intensive manhunt by the Provincial Investigation Unit, a warrant was issued, and Chauke was arrested at his home in Bendor on 12 November 2025. Law enforcement authorities subsequently seized his vehicles for rigorous forensic analysis.

The addition of the culpable homicide charge introduces a distinct, sobering layer to the star’s legal web.

While specific evidentiary details regarding this charge are expected to emerge fully during the trial, it follows a period plagued by severe automotive incidents, including a tragic 2024 car crash that left Chauke with profound physical injuries and required him to undergo specialized leg surgery while in custody.

Bail Hopes Permanently Dashed

For nearly a year, Chauke’s legal representatives have fought an uphill battle to secure his release on bail.

The Limpopo musician has seen three separate bail applications, alongside subsequent urgent appeals to the Polokwane High Court, flatly rejected or withdrawn.

The State has successfully opposed his release at every turn, classifying his file under Schedule 6 offences.

Prosecutors have consistently argued that Chauke poses an undeniable danger to the general public, has previously violated strict bail conditions, and represents a clear flight risk.

Concerns regarding potential witness intimidation were also validated by presiding judges, ensuring that the hitmaker will remain behind bars as a remand detainee until his trial kicks off.

Cultural Impact and Next Steps

The ongoing saga of Shebeshxt has deeply divided the South African music community and his massive fan base.

While his loyal supporters claim there is an targeted “agenda” to ruin his career, others point out that his long history of violent altercations, public brawls, and firearms infractions made this severe legal reckoning inevitable.

With pre-trial formalities wrapped up, both sides are locking in their evidence. Come May 2027, the state will attempt to prove that the Lekompo star’s chaotic lifestyle crossed the line into extreme criminality, while his legal team prepares a rigorous defense against a mountain of indictments.
