When they attempted to hijack the vehicle, the assistant driver pulled out a gun and opened fire, killing one of the suspects instantly and injuring another.

A resident who witnessed the aftermath said the incident left the community shaken.

“I heard gunshots and when I went outside, I saw a schoolboy lying on the ground bleeding,” she said.

“He still had his school bag and uniform on. The other boy was also badly hurt.”

Police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed the shooting.

“Gugulethu SAPS members attended to a shooting incident on Thursday, 2025-10-30, at about 10:15 in Godongwana Street, Lusaka, Gugulethu,” he said.

Van Wyk added that the assistant driver “retaliated and shot at the group of males, fatally wounding an 18-year-old male and injuring a 19-year-old.”

“The injured suspect was taken to the hospital under police guard. Officers also discovered a 9mm firearm without a serial number next to the body of the deceased, which was confiscated as evidence.”

“The revolver used by the assistant driver was also seized for processing,” he said.

Police have registered an inquest case, and the motive is believed to be robbery.

Residents in Lusaka say the shooting has raised fears among locals, especially since the deceased was still wearing his school uniform.
