Law enforcement spokesman Wayne Dyason said the chaos began around 3:26pm when officers on duty heard gunshots. As they responded, they saw a suspect running with a firearm.
The man allegedly pointed the gun at their patrol vehicle, causing the driver to lose control and crash into a wall. Three officers were injured in the accident.
While the officers were still attending to the injuries, a group of bystanders allegedly turned on them. The patrol vehicle was stoned, and the group allegedly attempted to set it alight.
Videos and photos of the incident quickly spread on social media. One clip shows a mob smashing the law enforcement vehicle, opening the bonnet, and looting parts, including the battery.
On Sunday, 14 September, MMC for Safety and Security Jean-Pierre Smith confirmed the arrests. He said police and the City’s Special Investigative Unit conducted tracing operations across 17 addresses.
“Following the events in Valhalla Park on Friday afternoon, a combined tracing operation was initiated by the City’s Special Investigative Unit (SSIU), Safety and Security Information Management (SSIMS), along with SAPS and LEAP, resulting in a number of arrests.
