In the modern era of South African football, few players have commanded the center of the pitch with as much elegance and tactical intelligence as Oupa Matthews Manyisa.

Known affectionately by the South African footballing public as “Ace” Manyisa became a household name during a period of unprecedented dominance for Orlando Pirates.

His career is a story of a local talent who rose from the dusty streets of Mohlakeng to the grandest stages of African continental football.

Early Life

Born on July 30, 1988, in Mohlakeng, Johannesburg, Oupa Manyisa’s journey into professional football began in the amateur ranks of Napoli FC.

His talent was evident from a young age, characterized by a low center of gravity and an uncanny ability to retain possession under pressure.

His development was significantly shaped by the legendary scout and coach Harold “Jazzman” Legodi at the Africa Sports Youth Academy.

Under Legodi’s mentorship, a young Manyisa was exposed to international standards, even undergoing trials with European giants like Chelsea, Manchester United, and Blackburn Rovers.

Although a permanent European move did not materialize, these experiences refined his technical skills and prepared him for the physical demands of the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

The Orlando Pirates Dynasty (2008–2017)

Manyisa joined Orlando Pirates in 2008, but it was during the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons that he etched his name into the history books.

Forming what many consider the greatest midfield partnership in PSL history alongside Andile Jali, Manyisa was the heartbeat of the “Double Treble” winning side.

While Jali provided the steel and aggression, Manyisa provided the “Ace”—the composure, the distribution, and the big-match temperament.

One of his most iconic moments came in the 2011 MTN8 Final against bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs, where he struck a sensational long-range goal in extra time to secure the trophy for the Buccaneers.

His consistency was unmatched; in the 2013/14 season, he set a record for the most appearances in a single season for Pirates, playing 51 out of 53 matches. During this decade, he led the team to:

• Two PSL Titles
• Two Nedbank Cups
• Two MTN8 Titles
• One Telkom Knockout
• Runner-up medals in both the CAF Champions League (2013) and CAF Confederation Cup (2015)

Transition to Mamelodi Sundowns and Later Career

In August 2017, Manyisa made a high-profile and controversial move to Mamelodi Sundowns.

While his time at Chloorkop added more silverware to his cabinet—including two more league titles—his spell was hampered by a series of unfortunate injuries, including a severe Achilles tendon rupture.

Following his departure from Sundowns in 2020, Manyisa sought to reignite his career with stints at TTM (Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila), Chippa United, and Platinum City Rovers.

Though his physical pace slowed, his tactical mind remained sharp, often serving as a veteran mentor to younger players in the squad.

International Career: Bafana Bafana

Manyisa earned over 30 caps for the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, making his debut in 2011.

He was a key figure in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad, where he scored a memorable goal against Senegal.

His international career reflected his club persona: a reliable, technically gifted midfielder who rarely wasted a pass.

Legacy and Current Status

As of 2026, Oupa Manyisa has transitioned into a role as a respected elder statesman of the game. While no longer a regular fixture on the pitch, he remains a vocal analyst and a mentor, frequently sharing his insights on the progress of his former clubs.

Manyisa’s legacy is defined by his composure. In a league often characterized by frantic pace, “Ace” was the player who could slow the game down, find the “killer pass,” and control the rhythm of a match.

For the “Ghost” (Orlando Pirates fans), he remains an eternal captain and a symbol of the club’s golden era.
