Mvelo Mthembu has been rewarded with a certificate after saving a child that was drowning at Amazimtoti in KwaZulu-Natal.

It was a normal day out with family at the Blue Marlin Hotel on Friday, October 25, for Mveloezinhle Mthembu, a grade four pupil at Amanzimtoti Primary School.

According to her father, Bongani Mthembu, Mvelo said she had been swimming at the shallow end of the pool when a lady with a toddler brought her attention to a child drowning.

Mvelo immediately swam towards the girl and pulled her out of the pool.

“My wife and I were a little distance away from the pool, keeping a close watch over Mvelo and her sister when suddenly my wife shouted that something was happening.”

“I jumped over the beach chairs, and as I got closer, I noticed Mvelo pulling out a girl from the pool. I don’t think she realised what she had done until after the incident.”

“We are proud of Mvelo and happy that she was able to assist. We will make sure that she continues with her swimming lessons as they have proven to come in handy,” said Mthembu.

He describes Mvelo as a kind-hearted and sensitive child from a young age. Mvelo has been awarded a certificate for her bravery by management at Blue Marlin.
