Sibongiseni Mthethwa has been described as the “best No. 6 in the country” by Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker.

Stellenbosch FC midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa has been described as the “best No. 6 in the country” ahead of Bafana Bafana’s upcoming international friendlies later this month.

Mthethwa continued his impressive form in the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season on Saturday when he was named as Man of the Match for his performance in Stellenbosch FC’s 2-1 win over Swallows FC.

The former Black Leopards star was a formidable figure in midfield and played a instrumental role in the build-up to Júnior Mendieta’s match-winning goal, striking the post with an effort of his before the Argentine tapped home to score.

Following the match, Stellies head coach Steve Barker singled the 27-year-old out for praise and once again called upon Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos to consider him for national team selection.

“Firstly, I want to just comment on Sibongiseni Mthethwa – fantastic footballer, week in and week out he puts in performances like this and I just hope the powers that be, the national team selectors, are taking notice,” Barker said following Saturday’s match.

“For me, he is probably the best No. 6 in the country right now so congratulations to him for that effort…”

Mthethwa is clearly held in his regard by the Stellenbosch FC management and it is the second time in as many weeks that a call has been made from the club for him to join Broos’ squad, who are set to be in action in yet-to-be-confirmed friendly encounters later this month.

“I just don’t know how a player like Sibongiseni Mthethwa cannot be close to the national team,” Barker previously said following Stellies’ MTN8 quarter-final defeat to Kaizer Chiefs late last month.

“I have never seen a player with so much energy, power, strength, and commitment. He seems to grow with energy the longer the game goes on and it was another top game from him again.”

Mthethwa would become only the fourth Stellenbosch FC player to play for Bafana Bafana should he receive a call-up, following on from Athenkosi Mcaba, Antonio van Wyk and Jayden Adams.
