Germiston residents have been left fuming after a mother left her three kids alone in a shack for about two now and is now living with her boyfriend.
According to Daily Sun, The three kids, aged eight, six and three were left to fend for themselves in the shack after their mum allegedly told them she was coming back, but didn’t.
The kids depended on hand-outs from neighbours and the eight-year-old looked after his siblings as he’s not attending school.
He wishes to go back to school and work for his siblings in the future as his mum doesn’t care.
“I was attending school in the Eastern Cape and she brought us here, but we are not attending school,” he said.
When Daily Sun visited the kids, the shack looked like a pigsty. There was a heavy smell of kak as the youngest child relieved himself in the shack.
“We sleep alone, and we don’t know when my mother will come back,” said the oldest child.
Neighbours said this wasn’t the first time the mother, who originates from Eastern Cape, abandoned her kids.
The landlord said: “She used to leave for two to three days, but this is worse. We’re worried about the children, especially the youngest. She still needs her mom’s attention but unfortunately, she left them.
“The kids haven’t bathed for days. She didn’t leave them food and it the neighbours who see to it that her children don’t sleep empty stomachs.”
On Wednesday, 23 October, Daily Sun joined social workers and the community to search places in the squatter camp the mother used to frequent, but she was nowhere to be found.
What makes residents angry is that the woman chose a man over her kids.
Gauteng Social Development spokesman Motsamai Motlhaolwa said they’re making arrangements to have the kids removed as their situation is dire.
Warrant Officer Majang Skalkie, acting spokeswoman for Ekurhuleni district police, said neighbours can approach the local police station to open a case of negligence against the mum.
