Karabo Moche, accused of murdering his lover, was found not fit to stand trial during his appearance in the North West High Court sitting in Mogwase on Wednesday, 28 August.
The psychiatric report revealed that his mental illness prevented him from understanding that his actions were morally wrong.
He was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
The report suggests that he lacks the mental capacity to participate in the trial and comprehend the proceedings fully.
He will be admitted to Bophelong Psychiatric Hospital and treated until he is restored to competency.
The 34-year-old allegedly stabbed his lover, Keabetswe Molefinyana (30), from Mabeskraal Village outside Rustenburg several times at the Mogwase Shopping Complex on 16 February 2023.
A witness’ statement read in court revealed that Moche stabbed the Keabetswe multiple times and ran.
He was immediately chased by the complex security and was later arrested.
The Keabetswe’s brother, Katlego Molefinyana, said they were disappointed by the outcome, which seemed more favourable to the perpetrator than the victim.
He questioned how the accused could claim mental illness when he premeditated the murder.
Katlego said they would trust God and pray that, eventually, the accused might come back to face the consequences of his actions.
“The outcome doesn’t give us the closure we needed. It has rather opened a new wound,” he said.
