Matias Esquivel has lifted the lid on his shock Mamelodi Sundowns departure just months after joining the Brazilians in a multimillion-rand move.
One moment Esquivel was part of Sundowns’ pre-season plans, seemingly in a deeper role in Austria, the next he is being unveiled as a Talleres player on a one-year loan.
The move came as a shock considering that Esquivel was roped in by Sundowns in January for a reported fee of R47 million.
However, the Argentine, who made his second Talleres debut this weekend, opened up on his shock exit from Sundowns, alluding to his family’s inability to adapt to South Africa as the main reason behind his departure.
“In South Africa yes, it was difficult, it was difficult for my family, they also suffered a lot. We were far from everything, but then we adapted little by little, but when the family needs a little fresh air, they want to be happy back [in their home country] and I spoke to my wife and I asked her, ‘what do you want to do?’ She told me, ‘let’s explore the option to go home, let’s visit the chance’.
“I then spoke with the club and they gave me the chance to come and I want to thank the club management for how easily they brought me [here] and now I want to give my best for the club,” he told Argentine media as translated from Spanish language.
In terms of football, Esquivel made 13 appearances, scoring two goals and setting up one assist, but the player says the rhythm in the Premiership is different to that of Argentina.
“The rhythm there is different, but I trained at the same time as everything there, it just wasn’t my turn, but I trained the same because in the life of a footballer, today you are here, tomorrow you are somewhere else,” he added.
