A man doused with hot cooking oil and is now nursing serious burn wounds after he was doused with hot cooking oil allegedly by his girlfriend.

The 38-year-old man from Mmotong outside Seshego, Limpopo was reportedly attacked at his home on Thursday, 4 December.

This incident caused uproar on social media, with claims that cops at Seshego Police Station refused to open an attempted murder case against the 28-year-old woman.

The girlfriend has since taken to social media claiming she endured years of sexual and emotional abuse by her lover.

“A day before the incident, he raped me in front of my kid,” read the post.

Limpopo police have set the record straight. According to police spokesman Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, the victim refused to open a case after learning that both he and his girlfriend would be charged with assault and arrested.

“The man decided on the spot that he will not open a case. Both of them preferred protection orders.

“He said he cannot open a case because his workplace does not allow employees who have pending criminal cases.”

“He confirmed that the burn injuries were from hot cooking oil poured on him allegedly by the woman,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba dismissed claims that cops refused to help the couple.

“Contrary to circulating claims suggesting that the police officials in Seshego refused to assist the couple, this is not true,” he said.

Mashaba added that the couple is expected to visit their nearest magistrates court to finalise their protection order applications.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe urged community members to stop sharing unverified information, warning that misinformation disrupts investigations and causes unnecessary panic.
